How Much Money Did Your Business Make in the First Month of the Year? Mine Made…

How wide open are you with your business and your numbers? How wide open do you need to be?

I just finished up an awesomely productive three days with Ryan McRae of ADHD Nerd. I profiled him recently in one of my Success Stories. We worked on a lot of things. I kept him on track a little and helped him escape to the Hot Chocolatier at the right moment. He helped me open up a new revenue stream.

We also shared lots of numbers and stats openly about how we do business. I’m talking income pluses and minuses, checkbook accounts, everything. It helped us both make better decisions about our respective futures.

That’s something I’ve always respected about my friend Dan Miller as well. On his podcast and his conferences, he’s always wide open about income from various streams he’s trying. He’s quick to say what works and why or why not.

I’m not saying you need to blab your financial secrets and stats all over the world on Twitter. What I am saying though, is that it might be good to find someone you can share these things with. Give it a try. A good friend or mentor might have some new insight that will help you level up.

What the heck is Hot Chocolatier, you ask? I’ll answer it with a pic of the Squirrel I got. ‘Nuff said.

Jack Reacher on Military Drifters

I’m a huge fan of the Jack Reacher series of books by Lee Child. The movies are so-so, but the books are a superb look into the mind of a professional military man turned drifter. For those of you in my age bracket, it’s like The Equalizer meets David Carradine’s Kung Fu.

I recently read The Affair, and there’s a section in the book where Reacher talks about military bums. I want you to read it and feel free to let me know what you think. I served in both the Marine Corps and the Army, and I know exactly what he’s talking about.

“You’re going to blow into town like some kind of aimless ex-military bum. You know the type. You’re going to be the kind of guy who feels right at home there, because it’s the kind of environment he’s familiar with”

“I know the type. Any soldier does. Towns near bases are full of guys who washed out for some reason or other and never got further than a mile. Some stay, and some are forced to move on, and the ones who move on end up in some other town near some other base. The same, but different. It’s what they know. It’s what they’re comfortable with. They retain some kind of ingrained, deep-down military discipline, like old habits, like stray strands of DNA…” p25

This is part of what I try to prevent by coaching veterans after military service. My goal is to help them find their place in life. If that involves the military, that’s fine, but if it doesn’t, then they sometimes need my help pulling away from that atmosphere. My Vision for NCO School

We’ve recently relaunched our wildly popular Leadership University with a new focus and improved courses. For years I’ve taught the course at EMS conferences and government agencies, but I’m  excited to expand it to the corporate realm.

In the military, non-commissioned officers (NCOs) form the backbone of the service. In the business world it is much the same, although the personnel involved go by different titles.

I came across a vision statement for the military NCO corps that I felt was applicable to the business world as well…

As you join the NCO Corps, you should become familiar with and understand the NCO Corps Vision. As stated, that Vision is :

An NCO Corps, grounded in heritage, values, and tradition, that embodies the warrior ethos; values perpetual learning; and is capable of leading, training, and motivating soldiers. We must always be an NCO Corps that:

  • Leads by Example
  • Trains from Experience
  • Maintains and Enforces Standards
  • Takes Care of Soldiers
  • Adapts to a Changing World
